The Drowned Cities

The Drowned Cities - Paolo Bacigalupi A worthwhile followup to Bacigalupi's Ship Breaker, though perhaps not quite as richly built. Bacigalupi has proven himself one of the brighter lights in science fiction, and the writing in this admittedly dark book only reinforces the thinking. Set in a post-oil, post climate-changed America that's wracked by civil war, Bacigalupi manages to touch on the issues of political intransigence, impending climate disaster, child soldiers and a host of other ideas -- all in a relatively short novel about a half-breed teenaged girl trying to survive a horrific environment. Bacigalupi has fast installed himself on the short list of authors whose books I will always buy.
