Deep State is built on a very interesting (and timely) premise: what if social media could be used to not simply report a popular uprising, but also start one?Given the public protests against the regimes in in Tunisia and Egypt, WJW's book is a timely one (given the timing of this book, you have to wonder how it is he didn't end up on the Today show; maybe he needs a new publicist). The book is neatly plotted and interesting and the characters are - by and large - interesting and real. Every once in a while, a twist in the plot felt a little odd (the final adventure to a remote location leaps to mind), but overall, it's another solid novel from Walter Jon Williams -- one of SF's underappreciated writers.
